Retention Phase & Its Importance

Since we have worked so hard to achieve that perfect smile we want to keep it that way! The retention phase is a critical and without it your teeth will be inclined to return to their initial position, ruining your teeth’s progress.

The Retention Phase begins when the orthodontist removes the patient’s braces and lasts for a minimum of 24 months. Though the patient has already undergone the phase including braces, the final orthodontic outcome depends on your retainer.

Retention Options

Due to the high importance of the retention phase on your final smile, we want to make sure we find the perfect retainer option for each patient. We use different types of retainers but what is ideal for one patient may not be for another. Therefor Dr. Meister works to find the best type of retainer based on each patient’s individual needs. Retainers offered at Meister Orthodontics are:

  • Clear Retainers
  • Bonded Retainers
  • Removable Hawley Retainers

Clear Retainers

For adult patients clear retainers are particularly popular. Clear retainers are transparent trays that fit over the entire arch of your teeth. Three factors make this a great option: They are inexpensive, they are easier to wear than most retainers, and the do not have any visible wires.

Bonded Retainers

Bonded retainers are typically recommended to patients in need of lower retention. This is a fixed wire retainer that will be placed on the back of the lower set of teeth.

Banded RetainersBanded Retainers

Note to patients: Should a bonded retainer become loose from teeth please contact the office to replace the bonding material.

Removable Hawley Retainers

This is the typical removable metal retainer. With a removable retainer please remember to remove your retainer before brushing. In addition, please brush your retainer before putting it back in your mouth.
