So, you are getting braces?

So you have decided to take the plunge into the world of metal braces? Congratulations! You are on your way to the smile you’ve always wanted! We are ready to provide you with some tips to help make your adjustment easier and smoother.

Should I eat before getting my braces on?

Yes! Since applying braces can be a lengthy visit, and your mouth may be sore afterward, we highly suggest eating a good solid meal before your appointment. While as dental health professionals, we are never keen to suggest consuming foods that aren’t good for your teeth, now might be the time to treat yourself to that favorite item you won’t be able to have at all once the braces go on. The night before your big appointment might be time to munch on some popcorn or chew your favorite kind of gum. After your braces are on, it’s time to restrict some of your choices for the benefit of your treatment.

What should I eat after my braces are on?

After your braces are on, you may feel sore for a few days. During this time, we recommend sticking to soft foods. These may include:

  • Scrambled Eggs
  • Yogurt
  • Smoothies
  • Soups
  • Oatmeal
  • Pasta
  • Cottage Cheese
  • Applesauce
  • Mashed potatoes
  • Ice cream (in moderation, of course!)

What foods should I avoid?

Once the soreness wears off, you are free to eat to your comfort level on most foods. However, you will want to avoid anything sticky, hard, gooey, or full of sugar. Items to avoid include but are not limited to, suckers, popcorn, ice, nuts, hard vegetables, caramels and other chewy candy, and more. It can be disheartening to say no to your favorite snacks, but remember the investment you’re making into your future and choose wisely!
